, quite disturbing. >> governor romney seized moment to speak to independent swing voters in the swing states time after time. you can tell it was practiced, prepared, i know what this debate's. this will be the decisive part of the electorate. each time he spoke to that, those who can still be swayed, as my friend mack murphy says, 46%, 48% of the electorate will vote republican if it's a cement bag with "r" on it, 46%, 48% will vote for a cement bag with a "d" on. you're concentrating on voters who may not have their minds made up. governor romney did a wonderful job of that and president obama did a poor job. >> it is worth noting, though, that the policies that mitt romney has been embracing thus far have not exactly been independent swing voter-minded policies. we'll talk about that next, just the facts. governor romney scored points for style last night. substance of his remarks was a different story entirely. a full audit of romney's tax plan just ahead next on "now." or get the yard ready for cool an energy weather?n to size? the answer? a lot less. the great american fix-up is

on social security the kinds of voters that you are talking about, mr. romney, in this debate tonight, when you say government is paying too big a role in people's lives. that's a tricky one for him to walk out of. >> are the elderly moochers? he's going to have to answer that question. >> service members on disability? i mean same thing. >> coming on the heels of the romney campaign trying to use joe biden's biden-esque turn of phrase the middle class has been buried and you know, biden has walked that back, you know, is it an indictment of the president? look if you're going to fight for the ground on the middle class i don't know that joe biden is the person you want to be sparring against. >> he is by far the best middle class, working-class figure in this race. but to me, the hannity, drudge, obama thing, the ryan thing, i mean, really? this is all they got? i mean, i found the -- i found nothing that obama said in that speech objectionable or disagreeable, similarly, i find ryan's thing not -- i mean there's a sophisticated and legitimate argument to be made about, you k

governor romney on the fundamental question of who the voters trust more on jobs and the economy. despite sluggish economic growth looks like people are feeling a little more optimistic. the consumer confidence index is at a four month high. yesterday the bureau of labor statistics revealed the economy added 400,000 more jobs than originally reported during the 12 months ending in march and back on the campaign trail yesterday, the president began framing his economic policies in patriotic terms. >> during campaign season you always hear a lot about patriotism. well you know what, it's time for a new economic patriotism. an economic patriotism rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong and thriving middle class. >> joining the panel now is msnbc's chris hayes here for a little segment we like to call up now. thanks for being here. >> great to be here. >> you saw all of this kind of evolving here, how much of this has to do with actual change in the economy and how much of it has to do with perceptions and the power of campaign messages? >> so i think there

governor mitt romney gave a speech or did an event or otherwise made some sort of policy news that had an impact on voters and on this race? >> i mean i don't know. it's been a while. that is one of the things about these campaigns. not that romney has lost it all in one moment through a fatal gaffe although there have been bad moments but every day he's losing it day by day each day in a new and creative method and i think it's very tricky and what you're starting to see in the quotes there is a potential for republican -- for kind of, you know, staffer starting to give premore tems to the press, spin how it's not their fault. toward the enof the mccain campaign they were preparing internal memos of how to exonerate themselves of blame. you'll start to see that coming. when that kind of thing comes, republican money people start to smell it and look for other places to put their resources. >> melissa, is there extra credit for losing creatively? you're a teacher and educator. >> i mean there actually is extra credit for losing creatively if you are a current office holder. if you are
